More Ottobre Shorts 3/2006
I decided to finish three pair of shorts all at once this time. No need to cut out each pattern seperately. I left out alot of the details like the patch pockets and belt loops. No need for all of the excess fabric. It is just too hot in Florida to add any extra bulk. I got the striped fabric from www.handmades.com, and the jeans fabric from Joann's. I combined the two fabric on both pair of shorts.
I also finished a matching tshirt from pattern #301 Creative Workshop. This pattern was interesting. According to the instructions they teach you to put the tshirt together as would be case with professional industrial standards. According to the instructions, you sewed the hems before you put the garment together. I used my coverstitch and my 5-thread safety stitch to make this pattern. I hate switching out the threads all the time. If I did not have to do that, it would take half as long to finish the tee. This was a size 92, and I think it will do just fine. The size 86 was too small. I cannot wait to start on my next project.
Coincidence, Fate and Irony
Very ironic that after all that heartbreak earlier this week that I am late getting my period. I finally push Lance to bring home a pregnancy test after ignoring it all week. The results were immediate. Positive. I did not know what to feel. Excited. Drained. Stupid. Our life is just so perfect right now, besides our losing Chanty of course. Nicolas, is almost three years old, and is just so dependent. Every morning he jumps out of his bed, and comes running down the hallway into our bedroom. I pick him up and slide him under the covers between my husband and myself. Then we smother him with kisses on each cheek, while he giggles happily. FUN! He is at a great age. Will I miss something having another baby? Then I started to think about being pregnant. Being pregnant was such a beautiful time in my life. I loved watching this baby grow and my tummy with it. I did want this baby. I wanted Nicolas to have a sister or brother to turn to in time of need. I know he would make a great big brother. He is such a gentle and kind child....moody, but kind. Maybe this is a sign that I have another chance to do it better...not perfect....but better this time. It is a good thing. I am excited and happy. Most importantly so is Lance. So here we go again..........

Another Ottobre Design
Yeah! I finally got to work on another outfit for my son. I really should not complain because I have been working on some baby outfits for my sister, whose baby is due in June. She is having a girl, and I cannot wait. Finally a girl in our family. It is going to be so much fun. I really shouldn't say that, because ever since I found Ottobre Magazine, I have found a ton of things to sew for Nicolas. My only problem is finding the material.
The new magazine arrived and I wanted to try out a pair of shorts, #12 3/2006 and a t-shirt #13. Both turned out to be really great. I made up the pants in size 86, which are too big in the width. Although he is 90cm, he is small and skinny, so I will stick to a size 80, and just add to the length. I used whatever fabric I could find, which was a red denim that I ordered from Handmades. The OD staff used a linen/cotton blend, which I think would have been better choice for the pockets. Denim is too heavy, even though this is a childrens denim, and quite lightweight. The pockets were a bit difficult, and time-consuming. I am not sure I would do them again, unless I really was using a linen, or lightweight cotton. The waistband proved to be once again a bit difficult. I am going to try my waistbanding technique next time.
The t-shirt turned out great. I was nervous about it. My last tshirt did not look so nice around the neck. The binding stretched out of shape, and bubbled. But they say that practice makes perfect, and I am quite pleased how this turned out. I did not use a special ribbing. I used the tshirt fabric, and cut it on the crosswise grain just like the tees mom gets me in Germany. I am not sure whether it will fit or not (size 86), but it looks fine. He was too dirty this afternoon to try it on. I dont like all the topstitching I did. I tried to bring out the red in the shorts, but I would have preferred to use the same color as the t-shirt in some cases. I also found out that next time, I will use a twin needle, because I like the effect better.
Now all I need is a nice pair of shoes that fit...........Argh!
A Blah Day
Cannot seem to get motivated to do anything today. The weather is somewhat dreary because bad weather is headed our way. Carrie and Cheryl came over with the kids to dye Easter eggs today. I was once again not prepared, and stressed out all morning long. Nicolas proved to be difficult as is most often the case with a 2 1/2 year old. He did not want to participate in any of the events including the pizza that Carrie had bought for the children, or the Easter Egg Hunt. He is not sick. I assume he was tired, so I put him to bed as soon as they left.
Aah, peace at last. Somedays, I just need the quiet, and today is one of those days. In order to better my mood, I have been contemplating what to sew next for Nicolas. The weather has been very warm for the month of March, and they say that the weather will be even warmer in April. I am not particularly fond of Nicolas in shorts and a T-shirt, because of his height. So, I thought about making him a few more JonJons. Then I am going to sew a few things for my new niece. That should be fun.
Just wanted to post this link that I came across today from our Ottobre group. This is a beautiful baby gift idea. http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=9245780&uid=4045518
Burda 9828
I have some more of this material left over, and will most likely still be able to sew a vest with it. I think I will save that project for next year. Read more...
Ottobre Baby Jeans 1/2005
Just finished making the following pattern with an orange stretch jeans material. The material is wonderful, and the pattern was quite easy to follow. The only problem I had was with the waistband. Ottobre had you measure the childs waist and then remove 7-9cm. Then you joined the ends of the elastic, and attached it to the wrong side of the waistband. Then you stitch the waistband through all layers. This stretched the elastic so much that I had to remove my first elastic because it was way too big. I dont think I will follow this method again. Instead I decided to copy a pair of pants that my mother bought for him in Germany. In that case, no seam allowance was stitched through the elastic. Instead there are two s.a. stitched below the elastic. This is a size 80.
